To my daughter Ava Rose
My inspiration

Benson the Brat
was a Bengal cat,
he was sleek....
he was smooth,
he was red, brown and black.
He had stripes like a tiger
that swirled all around,
and for a small cat
he could make quite a sound.
Benson was cheeky
and he thought he was cool.
He loved to play jokes,
but he was never the fool.
He was the first one to wake
and the last one to bed,
Benson was always
that one step ahead.
Benson loved to tease
all day and all night,
he loved to surprise,
to scare
and to fright.
One day he felt particularly bad,
it was April fool’s day
and there was fun to be had!
He started off early
by lying in wait.
He startled the chickens
as they came out the gate.
In a flurry of feathers
with hens left and right,
They Cackled about
their terrible fright.
The commotion raised the interest
of the family dog Dee,
who came snooping around
and laid under the tree.
Benson snuck up high
into the branches,
and launched toward Dee,
liking his chances.
Benson hit his mark,
landing on Dee with a THUMP,
Dee jumped up in surprise
and hit her head with a BUMP.
For when Dee sprung up
she hit her head on the swing,
but Benson wouldn’t stop-
he was
the April Fool king!
Benson went back inside
and hid under a bed.
When Ava walked by
he grabbed hold of her leg.
She almost fell over but
with a skip....
an a hop....
she stayed on her feet
and yelled
"Oh Benson STOP!"
But Benson wasn’t finished,
he didn’t know what STOP meant!
He climbed up the book shelf
as high as it went.
He waited in silence
until he heard someone come,
and launched himself thru the air....
landing on mum!
With her arms in the air
and cake on the ground,
she chased Benson the Brat
around and around.
“Go outside!” she cried
as she picked up the mess,
“You’re so naughty today
and you’ve ruined my dress”.
Benson ran off
to continue his reign,
as king of his own
April fool campaign.
He decided that it was time
to try and fool Dad,
but for this
a careful plan must be had.
He spotted dad raking leaves
under the maple.
They were piled up high
and looked
Oh so playful.
Seeing the leaves
gave him a grand plan.
He was sure it was perfect
to take down 'THE MAN'.
He snuck over slowly.....
darting here.....
darting there....
under the trampoline,
behind the chair,
between the pot plants
so dad could not see,
and buried deep in the leaves
under the tree.
