The alarm went off at eight o’clock. James opened his eyes
and quickly remembered it was Monday morning. He was
not ready for another whole week of school.

Struggling to pull the covers off of him and swinging his
legs off the side of the bed, James remembered something
so fantastic! It was his birthday on Friday!

This idea made him jump up and run
downstairs to share his excitement with his
mother. As James got to the bottom of the
steps, he saw a little box, wrapped in blue
wrapping paper with a silver ribbon.

James turned towards the kitchen and saw his
mother pouring a glass of milk. “Is that
present for me?” he asked his mom. “Yes
honey, but you cannot open it until Friday,”
she replied.
“Friday?!” he yelped. That seemed like a year
away.

The alarm woke James the next day, but he
welcomed Tuesday with a smile. “One day
closer to Friday,” he thought. While running
downstairs, he grabbed the banister to catch
his fall when he saw what was at the bottom of
the steps. The wrapping paper was the same,
all blue with the silver ribbon, but the box had
gotten bigger!

James ran to find his mom and asked her
about the present. His mother replied, “I have
no idea what you’re talking about.” James
thought it must have just been his eyes
imagining things. He ate his breakfast, got
dressed, and left for school. He knew deep
down inside that box grew over night.

The same alarm woke James Wednesday
morning. “Only a couple of more days,” he said
to himself. James ran downstairs with the
same pajamas, wearing a bigger smile than
the day before. “No way!” he shouted. There is
no way that box could have gotten any bigger!
Mom walked past and shrugged and seemed
like she had no idea what James was talking
about. He had no choice but to eat breakfast,
get dressed, and be on his way to school.

The sun was shining bright that Thursday
morning. One more day! This week flew by
very fast and James was convinced his eyes
were playing tricks on him. Instead of running
down the stairs, he tip-toed to the top step,
and before he could take a step down, James
saw a huge box with the same wrapping
paper, waiting patiently for him to approach it.

James finally made his way down the steps,
inspecting every corner and surface of the box.
He was speechless. The only thing he thought
to do was scream the word mom, and the only
thing she could do was shrug. She would not
explain the madness, but rushed me to get
ready for school.
