We hear the words race and racism a lot, but what do they mean?
Race is when we group people together because of how they look on the outside, like, what the colour of their skin is.
Racism is when we treat a group of people unfairly and badly because of their skin colour.

Some people like to say, "We don't see colour, everybody is equal" because they want to make racism to go away by pretending it isn't real.
But it isn't that easy to make racism go away. Some people are treated badly because they have different skin colours.
So, if we want everybody to be treated fairly, then we must
see that everyone is uniquely smart and creative. Everyone must have equal access to education and job opportunities. After all, everyone has the right to feel safe, heard and welcome wherever they go!

We don't see colour; there is no racism!

But we see colour everywhere we go!

What if everyone in your community welcomed diversity?
What does diversity mean? What would this look like, or feel like?

Diversity is when people from a variety social and ethnic backgrounds feel included and involved in their communities.
We feel welcomed and involved.
We have beliefs that matter.
We are respectful.
We hear each other.
We feel accepted.
We have roles.
We feel that we belong.

What should diversity look and feel like in a classroom?
