My life starts as an egg on a leaf. I can spend anywhere from 3-7 days within my egg, until I'm ready to emerge into the world. At this stage, I'm merely an embryo.

After my time as an egg, I emerge as a caterpillar. For my first meal, I'll eat my egg shell. After that, I'll eat most leafy greens that I can find.

In the 2-5 weeks that I'll spend as a caterpillar, I'll gain more than one thousand times my body weight! I will also shed my skin several times, revealing a differently colored exoskeleton each time.

When I'm ready for my final metamorphosis, I spin a fine layer of silk all around my body and attach myself to a branch. This is called a chrysalis. I usually hang upside-down, and get ready for my 1 - 2 week transformation.
