Nia was a 4 year old girl who was going to start her first day of school, so she was full of many emotions. She felt nervous to be starting something new, scared to leave her mom and dad, but most of all excited to learn and make new friends.

"You will do great my love, so don't worry so much." Nia's mother said in a gentle voice. Nia started packing her bag with her school supplies before bed so she would be ready to leave first thing in the morning.

Morning came and by the time Nia knew it she was walking into her new classroom where she got to meet her teacher, Mrs. P. "Hello, what is your name?" Mrs. P said. In a shy soft voice Nia introduced herself, "I'm Nia. Nice to meet you." As Nia walked to her seat she noticed many students who looked different from her.

They had different hair colors, different skin colors, and even dressed differently, so she became curious since she was used only to seeing just her family who looked like her.

But there was one student in particular that caught her eye. It was a little girl who had black hair and glasses just like her, but she noticed that this little girl was not in a seat like the rest of the class but in a wheelchair. The girl's name plate read, Jazzy. Nia had never met a child of her age who was in a wheelchair, so she was taken back for a second and had to gather her thoughts.
Throughout the day Nia was listening to her teacher and watching Jazzy closely. She noticed that there were fellow peers telling Jazzy mean things, like she was ugly, a weirdo, and gross just because she didn't look like them. It seemed to really bother Nia, but she didn't know what to do about the situation.

After a full day of learning Nia heard the loud bell ring “RIIINNG, RIINNG”. She knew that when the bell rings it was time to go home. Nia's mom was waiting for her at the bus stop. She noticed Nia had a strange look of sadness on her face. "Nia, what's wrong? Did you have a good first day of school?" her mother asked. "Mom, it was good but something happened that really bothered me." Nia replied.

Before Nia could say anything else her mother told her to go wait under the big Oak tree by the swing and that she will be right back. Nia walked to the oak tree and sat down on the red table waiting patiently for her mom to return.

A few moments later Nia's mom walked out with a glass of milk and a shiny metal tray of warm chocolate chip cookies. You could smell the cookies a mile away. Nia's mom sat down right next to her and said, "Tell me more about what is bothering you."

Nia explained to her mom that some of her peers in her class were making fun of a girl in a wheelchair and she didn't know what to do or how to handle the situation. Her mother asked her if the teacher had saw and Nia sadly said, "No"
