Alejandro's Place

In a small Mexican village, known as 

Agues Calientes (Hot Water), there was 

a poor little boy named Alejandro.

Alejandro lived in a gray adobe house 

that had a dirt floor. When the dirt was 

wet, it smelled like damp earth and clay.

He would sleep by the fireplace at 

night to keep warm.

Alejandro would wake up each morning 

before the sun came up. He would take a 

deep breath and smile at the sun.

Mamasita was making her tortillas out 

of golden corn for the day.

The smell excited him 

because his mouth would 

water at the thought of the 

tasty, crisp tortillas.

Alejandro got ready to walk to school. 

Nicolas and Carlitos waited outside each 

morning so they could walk to school 

                  together.

The boys looked up at the enormous, 

craggy mountains. It seemed that the 

mountains were staring at the boys with 

watchful eyes today.

The three boys walked to the banks of 

the river, and began to remove their 

Zapata sandals.
