      Jonas and Gabe wake up in a warm cabin. They 

find themselves chained to the wall being held 

hostage. The man questions them and he realizes they 

are from the dystopian community a few miles away 

in the woods where the river goes through. The man 

tells them his identity and it is Caleb. He never died. 

Jonas remembers The Giver telling him about a boy 

who was lost in the river and his body was never 

found. He chained them to the wall because he though 

the community sent them to bring him back. Caleb 

gives them food and water and they plan to raid the 

community.

      Jonas goes around the community to see 

what else is going on. Jonas started to enslave 

people. He enslaved people because Jonas 

realized Sameness was the right way. He gave 

the slaves no choice; this made everyone act the 

same.They gave all people memories of wisdom 

and respect. They start a civil war between 

sameness and elsewhere. They fight for years to 

come. Until they make a Peace Treaty. 

     Jonas wakes up at the bottom of the hill and 

realizes it was just a dream. He takes Gabe and goes 

into the nearest cabin. He sees a happy family in there 

celebrating Christmas and opening presents. The 

family sees Jonas and Gabe come in so they help them 

with all their injuries and invite them to stay.
