Breathe...push harder Leah...pace
yourself...don't let her pass you...These
are the words I whisper to myself while I
am running at the Green County Invitational.

You see, this is my first big varsity
meet and I didn't come to disappoint.
I can hear my parents, my
grandparents, and of course my
coaches cheering for me at the
sidelines. I can hear all of these voices,
sometimes clear but sometimes
overshadowed by my own breath and by
the sounds of runners around me. They
want exactly what I want but who wants it
the most?

I'm in a huddle with my teammates as we
say a prayer. My stomach starts getting
queasy as we head to the starting line and
then reality strikes. I hear the sound of
the gun and I take off. It feels like I am
drowning in an ocean of very tall creatures.
We all are fighting to get our place. Finally,
I have my position to start my pace and run
this race.

As I am running, I think about how my
teammates said that the course has
some tough hills. I see it, there is a huge
hill. I top the hill easily but know there is
more to come. I'm following the course
and go into the woods. I quickly feel relief
from the sun.

My race continues with winding trails, flat
grassy areas, steep hills, and tough
competitors. I pass several runners during
the course but one runner has stayed just
ahead of me the entire race. I know the
finish line is nearing and I want to pass this
one girl. Every race is full of goals. These
goals include keeping a steady pace, getting
over hills, controlling my breathing, and
passing as many runners as possible. Passing
this runner is my last goal of this race.

I speed up and can hear her breathing
heavy. I see a huge hill and the finish line
is at the top. "You can do this Leah," I say
over and over. I speed up and pass the last
goal of my race.
