Overview of Maine
Maine was a state that was very supportive of
the Union side. At the time of the Civil War,
Maine was considered a frontier state and the
majority of the residents supported the
Republican Party. One of Maine's most well-
known infantry was the 20th Maine Infantry
Regiment (whose flag is at the left). They
were a major supporter in the Battle of
Gettysburg.

Maine's contribution to the War
Maine contributed not only sent soldiers to the War,
but they contributed military supplies as well.
Maine sent about 70,000 military personnel, as well
as non-military support staff. The military supplies
were manufactured in the state. These supplies
included ships for the navy, artillery, and various
other supplies for the army and navy.

Maine Residents who contributed to the Civil War
Era
Several Maine residents contributed to the Civil
War Era. Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle
Tom's Cabin, shed light on the true treatment of
slaves. Hannibal Hamlin, the first Republican Vice
President under Abraham Lincoln, was from Paris,
Maine. U.S. Congressman James G. Blaine, who
proposed the idea of the 14th Amendment to the
Constitution, was from Augusta, Maine.

Famous Fort in Area
There were no battles fought in Maine during
the Civil War. Fort Knox, pictured at left, was
located on Penobscot River in Prospect, Maine.
Construction began in 1844 and finished in
1869. The fort was built out of granite.
During the Civil War, volunteers from the state
guarded the fort. The fort was armed with two
cannons that shot heated cannon balls which
could set wooden ships on fire.
