Luther Want's Change in the Catholic Church
Luther would ask himself "what must I do to be saved. The church said that keeping the sacraments and living a good life were the keys to salvation. When Luther studied the bible he got a different answer. He believed that no one could earn salvation. In his mind salvation was a gift from god that people received in faith. People were saved by their faith, not good works, he said.
Luther's theory brought him into a conflict with the church over indulgences. In 1517, Pope Leo X needed money to finish building a cathedral. He sent preachers around Europe to sell indulgences. Luther felt that the church was selling false salvation to uneducated people. Luther hung a list of arguments, against indulgences and church abuses on the church door in the town called Wittenberg. he also sent the argument list to church leaders. Luther's theses caused controversy and many people were excited by his ideas. The church condemned his ideas, and gradually he was pulled into more serious disagreements with church authorities.
In Luther's response to his critics he published a short book that explained his thinking. He argued that the Bible was the ultimate source of religious authority. Church leaders though that Luther was attacking fundamental truths of the catholic religion. In 1521, Luther was excommunicated. He was no longer allowed to be a member of the church. Luther then went into hiding for a while until.
A lot of German's saw Luther as a hero. He continued to develop ideas and his popularity ended up growing. Luther was organizing a new christian denomination, better known as Lutheranism. His new church emphasized study of the bible. Luther translated the bible into German. Peasants revolt broke out in 1524, the rebels expected Luther to support their demands for social and economic change. Luther sided with the rulers because he needed his new church to keep growing. Tens of thousands of peasants were killed.
Luther Start's his own Church
What Luther did made peasants reject Lutheranism, however a few princes supported Luther and Lutheranism continued to grow. The next 30 years Lutherans and Catholics were usually at war in Germany. These wars ended in 1555 because of Augsburg. Each prince within the Roman Empire could choose the religion of his subjects according to this treaty.
Luther is known because when he didn't think the church was right with what they were doing, he didn't just sit around and complain. Luther protested and made arguments because he thought that this wasn't right. Luther believed that teachings and study's from the bible were better than what the church was telling people Luther was excommunicated from his church and society, Luther then did something big by making his own church that emphasized study of the bible. Luther grew and gained more population over time after he organized a new Christain Denomination, better known as Lutheranism.
