
What is Existentialism in Education?
Existentialism is one of the educational theories. The person who is the Pioneer of existentialism is Jean-Paul Sartre. This theory is basically based on freedom. “Existentialism in education focuses on the individual, seeking out a personal understanding of the world.” (1). Existentialist education, try to make people think about their choices and it tries to create a free-thinking environment.
Truth and values are the concepts that changes person to person, society to society so itsn’t universal. That makes everyone different. Therefore, every individual has various opinions and expectations, and values. This situation same for children. That’s why each children should think free and decide what they want by guidance of teachers not according to directions of teachers.
To make this real there should be many options to students choose and they should choose what they want.
Education should help students to think about their life, questioning to find themselves and ask for the meaning of life. Each student should now their ability, their desires, passionate and as a result of this, they should choose what they want to learn, what they want to do.
As long as students choose their own subjects and they go for their passion they would be successful in life and school. That is why there should be different options for students to choose from.
