Book "The Scarlet Letter" left an extremely good impact on me and a lot of room for thinking about who to trust, who to get rid of, how to act in specific situations and how to be grateful because we no longer live in a period in which women were disrespected and misunderstood.
The action is based on an unfaithful woman, named Hester Prynne, who came to England before her husband, Roger Chillingworth, because he had to finish his job before he moved away. Hester Pynne should have waited faithfully for her husband, but she did the opposite. She cheated on him with the priest, Mr Dimmesdale. She hoped no one would suspect her awful urge, but her wishes were not obeyed.
She became pregnant with her daughter which she named Pearl. When people realized they were amazed by the fact that she got pregnant regardless of the fact that her husband was not in England. They connected the dots and came to the conclusion that she was an adulteress. Hester did not want to say who was also responsible for this horrible act, so she kept silent and she kept priest Dimmesdale secret.
At that time, adultery was the worst thing anyone could do, so Hester was imprisoned and a week later she was punished by having to go to the town square, to the pillar of shame and stand there with the letter A (The scarlet letter, which symbolized her as an adulteress) sewn into her dress. The letter was never allowed to be taken off her dress. She obeyed orders.
After people saw the scarlet letter on her chest they moved away from her, they didn’t want to talk to her and some even crossed the street to avoid any contact with her. The priest was innocent until the end of the story when the doctor realized that he was the father of little Pearl. The doctor gave him medicine to make his heart ache as much as possible and to make him feel the suffering for all the sins he had committed.
