Remember vowels are A, E, I, O, and U.
A goes with a word starting with a consonant.
Remember consonants are all the other letters in the alphabet.
A dog chased a cat.
The dog is an unknown animal; not your dog or your friend’s dog.
The cat is an unknown cat; not your cat or your friend’s cat.
The words dog and cat start with consonants.


An elephant ate an ice-cream cone.
The elephant is an unknown animal. Elephant starts with the vowel “E”.
The ice-cream cone is an unknown item. Ice-cream starts with the vowel “I”.


When do I use the articles the, a, an?
THE when the noun is KNOWN and starts with a consonant or vowel.
A when the noun is UNKNOWN and starts with a CONSONANT.
AN when the noun is UNKNOWN and starts with a VOWEL.
