
What is ADHD?
ADHD stands for Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disoder. It is a medical condition that affects how well someone can sit still, focus, and pay attention.
ADHD typically begins in early childhood and is commonly found in about 5% of children between the ages of 4-17.
There are 3 different subtypes within ADHD. Some may have Inattentive ADHD, Hyperactive-Impusive ADHD, or Combined, where both inattentive and hyperactive is shown.
Inattentive ADHD is a subtype that commonly occurs in girls. This subtype often display short attention span, can be easily distracted, forgetfulness, and procrastination.
Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD is a subtype that is most commonly shown in boys. Within this subtype, the child talks a lot and tends to interrupt others often. They also have difficulty staying still and likes to move around a lot.
Combined ADHD is the combination of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive ADHD where both are presented in a child.
It can be very difficult for children to focus and do school work with ADHD.
How can someone with ADHD be treated?
The best way to treat ADHD is with medication. The most common type of medication used are stimulants such as Ritalin, Focalin, and many more.
Stimulants are a kind of drug that quickly raises activity in the mind or body and can help someone be more alert.
