This story is a recreation of the short story "The Last Leaf" written by O.Henry in 1907 in his collection "The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories". Special thanks to my grandfather, Govind Jahagirdar for narrating this story to me and inspiring me to recreate this story. Hope you enjoy.......

Once upon a time there lived two young girls Sue and Johnsy. Johnsy suffered from pneumonia and was in bed all day. Sue would go out for work so that she could fulfill the basic needs of Johnsy such as food, medicines, etc. Johnsy would always stare at the leaves on an ivy vine from her window. She believed that when the last leaf falls, even she has to die. Sue would always say her to be an optimist but Johnsy was not convinced.
One day when Sue returned from work, she found Johnsy staring at the leaves again. "Ugh.....You're again staring at them." Sue said worriedly.
"Look Sue" She said pointing towards the only leaf on the ivy vine with her lean fingers.
"Eight...Seven...Six...oh.. one more has fallen. The other leaves are falling down because of the winds and heavy rains" she continued coughing.
"Only one of them is hanging on the vine..... When this last leaf falls, I have to go". Johnsy said with her pale face.
"Don't say such things Johnsy, have faith..." Sue said helplessly.
An old painter in his 70s named Behrman heard their conversation. Mr Behrman was their neighbour and aspired to create a masterpiece in his lifetime. He had spent his whole life time in painting and used sold them to earn his livelihood. But was unsuccessful in making a career in painting and remained poor.
To give the weekly health report of Johnsy, Sue visited the doctor.
"Is there any hope for her to get better?" Sue asked the doctor with a worried look on her face.
"I don't think any medicine will help because she is not willing to live." said the doctor.
"Is there anything I can do to get her better, doctor?" Sue asked hoping to find a way.
"The only thing you can do is to inspire and motivate her to stay alive." said the doctor.
"Okay doctor, I'll try my best get her back to normal." said Sue.
