This book is dedicated to my nephew Ollie and to shelter dogs everywhere

Once upon a time, there was a sad little dog who arrived at a local shelter. No one at the shelter knew why this little dog was so sad and so scared. The people at the shelter named him Varus and were determined to find him a loving home. Aunt Lori volunteered at this shelter, and she was there the day Varus was put up for adoption. She saw Varus being taken outside to meet potential adopters. Varus wouldn't let anyone touch him, and he kept trying to hide under benches and behind bushes. Aunt Lori heard the families say, "He's too shy" and "He's not friendly enough". This broke Aunt Lori's heart.
When Aunt Lori was driving home, she couldn't stop thinking about the sad little shelter dog. "All he needs is a safe and loving home", she thought. Aunt Lori had already adopted a black cat from the same shelter that she named Gigi. Gigi had also once been scared, but not anymore!
When Aunt Lori arrived home, she told Grandpa Bob about the shelter dog. "Let's go get him!", said Grandpa Bob enthusiastically. And that's what they did. The next morning, they drove to the shelter early to make sure they were first in line. And they adopted the little dog. On the way home, Aunt Lori asked about a name for the dog. Grandpa Bob said, "We already have a Gigi. How about Jojo?" What a perfect name! Jojo's new life was about to begin.
Jojo was very shy at first and still very scared. But there were many things at Aunt Lori's house that he liked. Aunt Lori took him on lots of walks. Jojo loved going on walks! There were so many great things to smell, so many things to pee on. He would see other dogs and bark at them to say hello. After his midday walk, Aunt Lori would give him a tasty treat. He felt happy on these walks.

Jojo also loved all of the comfy beds that Aunt Lori bought for him. There was the upstairs bed, the family room bed. There was even a bed outside! It seemed that wherever he went in the house, there was a bed waiting for him. He put one or two of his toys in each bed. The soft beds made Jojo feel very safe and happy.
One day, Aunt Lori took Jojo to a local dog park. At first, Jojo stayed by Aunt Lori and didn't play with other dogs. Then he saw Bosco and something clicked. Jojo and Bosco became instant best friends. They discovered they had both been adopted from the same shelter! Having a best friend made Jojo so happy.
