Chapter One: Do you believe?
Carol walked to the library after school with her friends.
"I can't believe we have so much homework!" Her friend Lilia said upset.
"It's the same as we usually do Lil." Carol's friend Grace said.
"No! We have a project to do too! Remember the one in Mr. Rogers class?" Her friends looked blankly at her so she continued, "He said we have to write about if we believe in magic!" The girls started laughing.
"Of course it exists!" Their friend Emma said. Everyone but Carol agreed.
"Magic doesn't exist you guys!" She complained. "Do you even have any proof that it does?"
"Well no, but I can just feel it." A friend named Rachel said. Again, everyone but Carol nodded. They soon reached the library and walked inside.
"Good afternoon girls!" Ms. Lee was the librarian of the only library in town. The girls lived in a little town in South Dakota.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Lee!" The girls said in unison. They went to the patio at the back of the library, sat down and started their homework.
.........
It was dinner time when Carol got home. She put her
bag down in her room, then ran to wash her hands before dinner.
"How's 9th grade going sweetie?" Her mom asked. She had just started high school that year.
"Great mom! We're doing a project in L.A. class! We have to write a ten page essay explaining if we believe in magic." She explained to her mother as she helped set the table.
"What are you going to write? Do you believe or not?"
"No way! All my friends believe in it, but I know that it doesn't exist." Her mom nodded indifferent as the rest of her family sat down for dinner. Carol sat next to her older brother, Dennis.
"Hi Denny!" Carol knew that her brother hated it when she called him that, but loved to tease him. Dennis rolled his eyes and started eating. He was senior in high school. The twins, Rebbecca and Maxwell giggled. They were in first grade. Their mom was a stay at home mom, to take care of their farm they lived on. The family's father was a construction worker, currently he was renovating the town hall.
.........
Carol was in her room, reading a book when suddenly she heard a knock at the front door. That's weird, she thought, it's almost midnight. Her younger siblings were sleeping, her parents were on a date night, and Dennis
was out with his friends, she had to take care of the person herself. She went downstairs and looked out the window, there was nobody there. That's odd. She thought. Carol opened the door and looked to see if anyone was outside. Nobody. She then looked down and saw a sticky note with something written on it.
Are you reading the right book?
Carol rolled her eyes, thinking it was a prank. She went back up the her room, set the note down and went to bed.
Chapter Two: The Right Book
During the weekend, Carol was cleaning out the attic with her mother. She opened up a box and saw a strange book. She picked it up and blew off the dust.
"What's this mom?" Carol asked. Her mother walked over to her.
"Your father and I found this book on our porch step when we first bought the house. We thought it was funny that it said "Magic" on the front, so we kept it." She continued, "You might be able to use it for your project!" Carol doubted it, but kept the book anyways.
........
Carol woke up in the middle of the night. She heard
something move. She checked the time, it was 2:00 a.m. she knew none of her family was awake, so they couldn't have done anything to make that sound. She then looked around the room and stopped at the magic book her mom gave her. It was on her bedside table instead of her desk she set it on. Carol thought that maybe it was a robot or controlled by someone, so she grabbed the book and sat up. She opened it up to the first page. It was blank. She stared at it confused, until words started forming in front of her eyes! The book eventually said, Now, you have the right book. Carol's eyes widened remembering to note from the door. She ran over and picked it up. It now said something different.
Let me out please. Believe.
Carol was now extremely confused and frightened. Who was trapped and why were they asking her to let them out?
"H-how?" She whispered. The book suddenly moved again, Carol ran over to it. It now told her to go to the window and shine the book in the moonlight. She did as she was told. After what seemed to be a lifetime, the book fell to the ground. And something seemed to be coming out of it.
