Matariki is the mother of eight children. Together they all create the Matariki star cluster. The time Matariki appears, sets the date of the Maori New Year.

The eldest of Matariki's children, is known as Pohutukawa. She is the star of the deceased.

Tupuanuku is connected to food grown on the ground. "Tupu" means grow and "nuku" is the shorter version of "Papatuanuku" which means earth.
