What is a noun?

A word that is the name of a person, place, animal or a thing.

EX- Mike likes to go to the zoo and see the dolphins.

Types of nouns:

-Concrete and abstract noun

-Common and proper noun

-Collective noun

-Countable and uncountable noun

Nouns that have real physical presence are called concrete nouns.

A noun that you can see, hear, smell, touch or taste.

Ex- Strawberry, book, bottle

Concrete noun

Nouns that don't have real physical presence are called abstract nouns.

A noun that describes an idea or a feeling. We don't hear, touch, taste or smell these feelings.

Ex- Anger, freedom, happiness

Abstract noun

Common noun

Nouns that name any general person, place, animal or a thing.

Rule: They are not capitalized unless they

come at the beginning of a sentence.

Proper noun

Nouns that are names of specific

persons, places, ideas or things.

Rule: They are always capitalized.
