"Man, like all socially organized beings,
has a natural passion for idleness.
There are, however, two incentives to work:
the need to live
and the desire to improve the conditions of life."
~ Alexis de Tocqueville

My name is Jeffery Kurr. I am 12 years old and I immigrated to America two years
ago from Germany. I live with my mama and papa, aunt and uncle, two sisters, and
my grandfather. In our tenement are also 3 other families, each about the same
size. Luckily we arrived in a town full of other Germans. It was so nice to see
Schnitzel and hear German being spoken. Everyone was friendly and tried to help
us. My papa , uncle, and I work in a factory making Model T cars. My aunt and mama
work in a factory making jeans. We are lucky that we make enough money for food,
but we do not have enough money for my sick grandfather. His body was weakened
by our long journey and since we don’t have clean water or out houses he has gotten
sick. Unfortunately we are too poor to buy him the medicine he needs. We do our
best with mama’s chicken soup. Grandpa sleeps all day, but hopefully he'll get
better soon. Once we get home from work, normally an 8 to 10 hour day, mama and
my aunt make dinner for us while I sit and read to my grandpa. I am learning to
read from my father. We do not know much, but I am trying to learn so I can have
a better life when I’m older. Hopefully we will get more work and our community
will stay welcoming and helpful.

This group of naturalist artists paints pictures showing
the social realities of our time. Through their art, these
painters attempt to explore the less desirable elements
of our lives with the use of expressionism and
abstraction. They are part of a modernism artistic
movement.
