Time travelers Doctor Bee and his best (pri)mate, Costa, crack open the door to their time-pod slowly. Costa sees what he hopes is a banana tree. He bursts through the door before Doctor Bee can warn him to be careful. Costa is bananas for bananas. Doctor Bee gathers his supplies before chasing after Costa. He is worried the creatures of this time zone could be dangerous ...and for good reason! (The creatures of the Mesozoic era are known for being dangerous, seeing as they are dinosaurs). Doctor Bee is so worried about what could be lurking behind each leaf he doesn't think to look at where his feet are landing. *SWOOP* He falls to the ground. "Costa, why did you put this banana peel in the middle of the trail?" Doctor Bee grunts while rubbing his bumped head.
Costa came rushing out of the banana tree and pulled Doctor Bee back onto his feet. Then he helped the doctor pick up his tools, papers, devices and the rest of his belongings. Under a muddied canteen Costa discovered a big round egg. It was beautiful, but it was cracked. Doctor Bee was worried his fall may have damaged the egg. He picked it up slowly. The egg was heavy and warm. Doctor Bee blocked the light of the sun with the egg to see what might be inside. He could see the silhouette of a baby tyrannosaurus.
Costa realized what they had found and started to hoot and grunt out of fear. If there was a baby t-rex, where was the mother t-rex? Doctor Bee calmed Costa down and they climbed to the top of a sunbaked boulder. The Forrest was so calm and they could only hear the bustle of dinosaurs from far in the distance. The doctor carefully continued to inspect the egg. The cracks were not very bad. After a few minutes he had assured himself that the baby inside, and the timeline alike, were both fine. Costa helped Doctor Bee make a mud and leaf nest in a safe spot next to the banana tree. It looked very cozy; It was made for the egg perfectly.
As soon as Doctor Bee set the egg into its new place his plan was to continue exploring. He turned around and Costa followed inches behind. "Crack, caaaw, Gweeeeg." Shivers went up his spine. What could that noise have been? At first Doctor Bee was frozen stiff until Costa knocked him over. They looked over their shoulders, hoping to find a compsognathus, the smallest of all dinosaurs, behind them. There was nothing, in fact, there were no dinosaurs in sight. Costa pointed to the egg, which was now missing part of its shell. Coming from the small missing section lay a bright blue string glistening in the sunlight. A tail perhaps?
The man's heart sank. They must have broken the poor t-rex's egg and doomed it. Out of desperation Costa grabbed up the egg and handed it to Doctor Bee. He cooed sadly, wishing he hadn't left a slippery bandana peel in the pathway. Doctor Bee pulled back another section of the cracked shell. More shiny blue scales lay within the egg. "Gwwweg, Gwweggg, wraw," the egg called out. Doctor Bee was so startled he dropped the egg immediately. Costa sprung into action, catching fragments of the egg and the baby t-rex just before it landed on the forest floor. "Gwwweg, Gwweggg, wraw," called the adorable blue tyrannosaurus. It's eyes blinked slowly then it latched onto Costa's nose with its huge teeth. Costa started screaming, spinning, and jumping all over the place. Doctor Bee pried the baby's ferocious jaws off of his friend.
The man pulled some jerky out of his backpack and hand fed it to the little dinosaur. The blue baby ate his fill of the meat and fell fast asleep. Doctor Bee sat it back in the place its egg had been just minutes before. As he started to walk away Costa looked at him with the saddest eyes he could conjure. The pestering monkey frowned as hard as he could and began to whimper. How could doctor Bee say "no" to a face like that? Costa wanted to keep the poor tyrannosaurus. He wishes with all his heart that they could care for the baby, even if it was for only a few days. Costa continued to peer at the doctor with his sad eyes until he got his way.
By the time they set up camp the sun was almost down and the sky was glowing orange over the massive Forrest. Costa held the t-rex baby like a real baby, rocking it back and forth. They quickly became inseparable. He named the baby Gweg. Doctor Bee was worried about how sad Costa would be when it was time to leave the quickly growing dinosaur behind. Over the next few weeks doctor Bee drew up maps of the whole section of forest. His maps stretched from a few rivers to the East all the way to a steep cliff to the West. In no time Gweg had become big enough that Costa no longer stood taller than him. At dusk the three adventurers would play around the warming campfires that Doctor Bee made.
In the mornings Gweg would wander off for breakfast but always returned by the time Costa woke up. After a few months, and nearing the last days of their trip Costa woke up alone. The doctor, as usual, was out doing his work, mapping or observing the wildlife. But where was Gweg? By lunchtime Doctor Bee had stopped back at camp for a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich. Still Gweg was nowhere in sight. The three had grown so close over the last few months that even Doctor Bee was sad. He got no work done the next few days. He had hoped to at least say goodbye to Gweg before heading back to the time-pod and back to his own era.
Costa and Doctor Bee waited at camp until their rations were all but gone. They knew it would be nearly a three day hike back to the time-pod. Eventually they sadly packed up camp. Costa whimpered as they did their last look through camp to make sure nothing would be left behind. Doctor Bee had mentioned It was important nothing got left behind because it could ruin the timeline. They hiked and hiked. Doctor Bee's feet were blistered and sore. Costa convinced him to make their small camp for the night a little early. They were both ready for a good night's sleep.
As soon as the sun went down they were in their sleeping bags under the unbelievably starry sky. Doctor Bee closed his eyes and would have been fast asleep, but he heard something from behind the tree line. Something was thrashing and growling. Costa and the doctor even heard it scratching against the bark of trees in the distance. They were so afraid of what dinosaur could have been making such a ruckus that they could not fall asleep the whole night. Just as the sun began to peak from behind the Eastern mountains Doctor Bee decided to investigate...
