Henry Hudson was an English navigator and explorer. He was born in 1565. Not much is known about his early life.

He most likely went to a good school, because he could read, write, and do math.

Henry Hudson married a woman named Katherine, and they had three sons, Oliver, John, and Richard.

In 1587, he sailed on John Davis' ship trying to find the Northwest Passage. He thought that if the Arctic ice melted in the summer, he could sail over the top of the world to India.

After he returned, a man named Richard Hakluyt recommended Henry for captaining a ship for the Muscovy Company, who wanted him to sail to China.

He failed to find China, and the Muscovy Company was not pleased. He could not navigate past the large heaps of ice.

This time, Henry went to the Dutch. The Dutch East India company sent him to find the Northeast Passage to Asia. He was blocked by ice again, but this time disobeyed the Dutch and searched for the Northwest passage.

This time, instead of finding the Northwest Passage, he found what would later become New York. He entered a river there, hoping it would be the Northwest Passage.
