


Author Biography
Arlenys Lago is a tenth-grade student at Felix Varela High School and the author of “The Wild Inside”. Arlenys is studying to become a veterinarian to all types of animal. She currently has one adult goat and three baby goats; she also has a pig and chickens. Arlenys Lago is part of an organization called Future Farmers of America (FFA), where she learns the importance of leadership, responsibility and about agriculture.

What is Animal Science?
Animal Science is the study of animals in the food industry, production industry, and the study as a companion animal. The animals that are included but are not limited to are beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep, pigs, and goats!
What are the fields of animal science?
The main fields of animal science are
- Animal Physiology
- Reproductive Physiology
- Animal Behavior
- Animal Product
- Genetics and Breeding.
Animal Physiology
Physiologists study how the animal body works and why it works in that way. They study the organs, body, and muscle movements of all animals. By studying animals bodies, it allows physiologist to maintain pets, livestock and marine animals healthy and productive.

Humming birds move their wings in a figure 8 motion to maintain in the same place, allowing them to get nectar from the flower.

Reproductive Physiologist
A reproductive physiologist studies the anatomy of an animal that leads to having offspring (Babies). This is extremely important to know because it helps identify if there is a problem with the animal and in what ways it can be changed to improve the defect.

1 out of every 15 chickens lay an egg without a shell, which usually has a texture of a bounce ball. This is not a good sign because then the babies are not protected enough to survive in the egg.

Animal Behavior
The studying of animal behavior is knowing why an animal acts the way it does and what it means. An example of this is when a dog is nervous it tends to lick its nose a lot and tuck its tail in between their legs. Ethologists look for these signs to determine if a dog is nervous due to the environment or because of a object or person.

Animal Product
Animal scientist work to make sure meat, milk, eggs and other products from animals are safe for consumption and use of the item. There are two approaches that animal scientist take to make sure the animal product are safe: First it is studying the different techniques to keep product safe on their trip to the store and the second way is studying how to raise the animal for better outcome of products.
