Maple just celebrated her 5th birthday, which meant that she could start flying lessons at Dragon Elementary School. She was excited to meet new friends and finally learn to fly through the sky, but she was also nervous.

Since Maple was very little, Momma Dragon Would Always help her stretch her wings. She would put Maple on a kitchen stool and tell her, “Fly to momma, Maple! I promise to catch you.”

But Momma won’t be at school with Maple. What if she falls? What if the other dragon students laugh at her? What if her wings can’t hold her up in the air?

The more Maple thought about school, the sicker she felt. She couldn’t sleep, her tummy hurt, and it felt as if an elephant sat on her chest.

While Momma Dragon helped her pick out a new school bag and shine her scales, the nervous feeling inside grew bigger and bigger.

The night before the first day of school, Momma Dragon wrapped her tail around Maple and pulled her in close. Momma asked, “What is making you look so sad? Aren't you excited?” Maple looked up at Momma Dragon and shook her head. “What if I can’t fly? What if everyone laughs at me? I just can’t go.”

Momma Dragon smiled down at Maple and said, “Everyone is learning how to fly, so no one will laugh at you. Also, how will you know that you can’t fly if you don’t try?” Maple shook her head, “It’s too hard, momma. I won’t be able to do it.”

Momma Dragon kissed the top of Maple’s head, “It’s okay to feel anxious or really nervous, but don’t let it stop you from trying.”

The next morning Maple sat in the forest clearing behind the school with Mrs. Firestone and her classmates. There are all kinds of dragons in her class and they all seem excited to learn. Maple was still anxious, but she promised Momma that she would at least try.

Mrs. Firestone showed the class how to kick off the ground and spread their wings so that they can float off the ground. Maple watched some of her classmates kick off the ground into the air, but she noticed one of her classmates, a purple dragon, having a hard time lifting into the air.

Maple walked over to the dragon and said, “Hi my name’s Maple. What is your name?” The purple dragon smiled, “Hi, I’m Blaze! Are you having a hard time flying too?”

“Momma says I need to at least try to fly, but I’m anxious.” “Oh well, it’s okay, I can show you!” Blaze wiggled her wings some more and pushed off the ground. Maple looked up at Blaze as she floated in the air.

Mrs. Firestone clapped her hands together, “Great job class! Maple, you need to start practicing. Here let me show you.”

Mrs.Firestone took Maple’s hands and told her to bend her knees, but Maple felt like the whole class was staring at her. She promised Mrs. Firestone that she would try again tomorrow.

Maple felt alone because she was the only dragon in Dragon School Elementary to not fly today. She also felt sad because she promised Momma Dragon that she would at least try, but she just couldn’t do it.

When Maple thought about lifting off the ground she felt like the elephant on her chest was getting bigger.
