There once lived an American boy named Jim Doherty, he was a short boy with dark brown hair, eyes the color of ice, and a heart of gold.

As a child Jim lived a very ordinary life. He delivered groceries to people in his town and made his own paper route for the Philadelphia Bulletin.

But it all changed when he was just 17...

A war had broken out and Jim, like many other young men wanted to help, so that is exactly what he did. He signed up for the military to fight in World War Two.

On February 12th, Jim got the call. The country needed him. Jim was ordered to report for training to prepare for combat.

Jim, we just got a call... They want you to start training to fight in the war.
Jim was instructed to bring only three things for his new life. A change of underwear, a change of socks, and a toothbrush.

And with only his underwear, socks, and toothbrush Jim rode the train for 70 hours across the country to San Fransico, California for training. Leaving his ordinary life, for the life of a hero.

But the life of a hero for Jim was nothing like the movies. He didn't wear a cape or have super strength.

The life of this hero consisted of early mornings tasteless food, and tough training.

Jim was homesick, he missed his family, he missed his ordinary, comfortable life, but he knew that his country needed heroes so he trained like one and learned to fly at just 18 years old.

Before he knew it, the time had come, all of the hard days of training were to prepare him for this very moment...

He and his friends took flight to fight evil, but Jim did not have wings or superpowers, this hero was the pilot controlling an A26 Invader Aircraft.

BOOM!
CRASH!
BAM!
Jim and his friends fought Japan, dropping bombs from the air.

But unlike the movies, this hero was not indestructible...

This hero's wings were damaged, and before he knew it Jim was falling from the clouds to a mysterious island below.

But like a true hero, Jim did not accept defeat. He fought for his life just as hard as he fought for the lives of many others.

We will not give up that easily boys! We are going to land on this island! GET PREPARED NOW!!!
His heart pounded faster than a cheetah.
His mind raced with fear.
Butterflies danced in his stomach as he plummeted towards the Earth.

As Jim plummetted to the Earth he and his friends found a long pathway they could try to land the airplane on.

But as his plane touched down on Earth, he quickly realized this was no ordinary runway.

This is not sand, this is not rock, this is not dirt, but what could it be? Jim thought to himself as clouds of the mysterious land beneath them rose into the air.
It was the coral from the oceans that surrounded the mysterious island.

The plane touched down at a blazing speed of 90 miles per hour, and the furiously spinning wheels threw the coral beneath them.

The coral dust rose to Jim's eyes blinding him and his friends.
Before he knew it, Jim found himself flying 90 miles per hour on a mysterious island. Blind!

But with all odds against him, Jim managed to bring the plane to a stop keeping his two copilots safe.

Jim and his friends found themselves safe from the dangers of the air, but they had new problems to face on the land. After being stranded for 15 days Jim and his friends had finally contacted another member of the airforce and soon enough they were rescued and brought home to safety.

Jim sighed in relief, he had survived. But unlike the movies, this superhero didn't complete the mission and move on...

Jim was told many times he should come home for good, that he should give up, that he had done enough, and he should retire from the airforce. But Jim knew his country needed him. So this superhero went on to complete 50 more missions in the airforce.

He knew he was not a superhero like in the movies, he knew he did not have superpowers, he knew he was not indestructible, but Jim also knew his country needed his help, so that is just what he did...

Jim was no Captain America, but he was an American hero.
