Fascinating Ecosystem
Did you know what an ecosystem is? Well let me explain. An ecosystem is a place where animals all live in one biome. For example, the Desert is an ecosystem that has lots of animals that can adapt and live without water for several days. My ecosystem is the Rainforest which has lots of animal species. The climate in the rainforest is usually higher than 93* F (34* C) or drops below 68* F (20* C). Usually it’s really hot and rainy in the Rainforest. I hope this helps you understand what an ecosystem is.
Helpful Producers
Shrubs are one of the rainforest producers. They help the rainforest plants get better soil. Shrubs get their energy from sunlight, they get water from the rain in the forest. They also get nutrients from sunlight. One of their adaptations to the environment is getting the water they get from the ground through the leaves.
Algae also gets energy from sunlight and rain. It finds nutrients in the water. They eat nitrogen as their nutrient source. Some algae types fold in the water to a position so they can get water easier. They form an energy food web of the rainforest animals.
A consumer is an animal that eats other organisms. One of the consumers is a Leopard. A leopard is a carnivore that gets energy and nutrients from animal meat. Carnivores eat lots of meat from animals. They drink water from the rivers and find shelter in the treetops.
Baboons are Omnivores, which means they eat animals and plants. They get nutrients from fruits and water from rain. They also hide in the treetops as shelter.
Cool Consumers
A Howler Monkey is a herbivore which means the animal only feeds on plants, no animals. They also get energy from fruits and plants and they get water from fruit juice in fruits and vegetables. They have shelter in the canopy higher branches.
Amazing Decomposers
A decomposer is an organism that helps the ecosystem keep on living. If decomposers weren’t a thing the Rainforest would be gone by now. And animals would become extinct.
Algae is one of the decomposers, it gets its energy from sugar and water they consume through their body. They get nutrients from digestible foods. Their shelter is located underground. They also return soil for more plants to grow.
Fungi gets its energy from sugar and protein and they also get water from their fungal cell. Nutrients they usually get is from food and it stays underground. Its adaptation is moving only a small bit. Fungi gives nutrients to the rainforest.
Earthworms get energy by eating organic matter they also get water from the oxygen underground. They get nutrients from soil, leaves, and roots. They spend their time mostly underground and stay there as shelter. They help the rainforest recycle organic material.
These are all the decomposers in the Rainforest.
Energy Pyramids
“What is an Energy Pyramid?” Well an Energy Pyramid is a diagram that shows what organisms eat each other. Plants are the primary producers, which means they are the plants that produce the nutrients, oxygen, fats, etc. for the Primary Consumers.
The Primary Consumers are Herbivores and Omnivores which eat the Primary Producers. The Secondary Consumers are the animals who eat the Primary Producers and the Primary Consumers. This explains what an Energy Pyramid is.
Quote: It is estimated that thirty-five to fifty acres of rainforest are chopped down every minute. -George B. Schaller
Fun Food Webs
“What is a Food Web?” Well a food web is a diagram that shows what animals eat. For example; a monkey eats bananas from a banana tree, and the Jaguar eats the monkey, and when the Jaguar dies, it gets eaten slowly by Bracket Fungi.
Seeds are a Producer so they get eaten by a Macaws Bird, which then gets killed by a Python Snake, and when the snake dies the Fungi eats it.
Then an Orchid by another Macaws which gets eaten by a Jaguar and then gets eaten by Fungi.
Bamboo, also gets eaten by monkeys and then killed by a Jaguar and eaten by Fungi and the food web keeps going.
Quote: The silencing of the rainforests is a double deforestation, not only of trees but a deforestation of the mind’s music, medicine and knowledge. -Jay Griffiths
