February 6th, 1895, a baseball star was born. He would be known as George Herman Ruth Jr..
He lived with his sister who was named Mamie and both of his parents. While growing up, his mother was very sick and his dad worked very hard daily in the saloon that he owned to take care of their family.

Ruth didn't have much supervision growing up because of his father working and his mom bed ridden. He would get into a bit of trouble.

He stole, chewed tobacco, started drinking heavily and getting drunk from time to time at a very young age. He would skip school and sometimes have run in's with the police.

His father finally realized he wasn’t going to be able to properly take care of Ruth and sent him to a Catholic boarding school, called St. Mary’s Industrial School for boys located in Baltimore, Maryland which was run by the Xaverian Brothers.

For 10 years, he was in and out of the school until his ill mother finally died of Tuberculosis. He then became a permanent resident of the school.

It was at this school where Ruth was introduced to the world of what real baseball was. He used to play makeshift games with the other young boys using the materials found in the streets.

One of the brothers (also known as the teachers) at the school named Brother Matthias, was able to put a sense of discipline into Ruth and became Ruth’s coach using baseball as a reward. Brother Matthias decided to use this reward as a way to keep Ruth away from activities that would only get him into trouble.

As time went on, Ruth started to stand out for his incredible skills in both pitching and batting. Ruth loved the game of baseball so much that he played as much as he could, almost daily in just about any kind of weather imaginable.

As he got older, scouts came to visit the school and watch the students play. At the young age of 19, the manager of the Orioles, Jack Dunn took an interest in Ruth and made the decision to sign him. He signed in February, right before spring training was due to start.

Ruth was noticed more for his pitching skills than anything else at this time. This is the team where Ruth earned himself his most famous nickname- Babe Ruth. The older players started to call him Dunn’s babe because Dunn took him under his wing as a son.

In July, of that same year, midway through his first season with the Orioles, Babe Ruth caught the attention of the Boston Red Sox who turned around and signed him. On this team, he pitched for a bit but this was when he started to become recognized with his hitting talent which allowed him to move up in the batting order and display his home run hitting talent.

It was in 1918 while he was with the Red Sox when Babe Ruth tied the record for homeruns with Tilly Walker, both had a total of 11 home runs.

The following year ,1919, Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees at a record cost of $100,000 and started his career debut. As soon as the Babe joined the Yankees, they started winning more and more titles.

He became more and more well known for his hitting and became known for the great homerun displays he would put on at each game.

In his very first season with the Yankees, he broke the record by smashing 54 home runs while at same time breaking his own batting average record. He earned a new batting average of .846.

While Babe Ruth was with the Yankees, fan attendance at the stadium was at its highest and they had to build a new stadium to be able to provide more seating for fans and reporters.

This stadium was known as “The House That Ruth Built” and was in use from April 18, 1923 to October 2008.

While with the Yankees, people not only filled the stadium and streets, they would gather around the radio to hear the games and his name and listen to how his fame grew with each game.
