It was on the way home from school that Abdullah saw the butterfly. The bus pulled off the road and stopped part-way up the mountain to let some children off at their village. Looking out the window, magically Abdullah saw the butterfly resting on a leafy fern.

It was as large as a saucer and glowed green as a new papaya leaf, hemmed with velvet black. Not quite believing what he was seeing, he watched it fold its wings upwards to show the sapphire smudges underneath.

The bus started to move and Abdullah leapt out of his seat. He grabbed up his bag and butterfly net, and stumbled down the aisle.
