Once upon a time people living in Florida included, runaway slaves, Seminole Indians, Spanish colonists, and English traders.
In 1804 President Jefferson sent two men to buy Florida because white Americans wanted Florida to take slaves back and to expand the nation because they believed in manifest destiny.
In Florida, as Spain's control weakened they had trouble stopping raids on nearby farms by Seminole Indians and runaway slaves.
President James Monroe sends Andrew Jackson, a war hero, to Florida to stop the Indians and ex-slaves from raiding nearby farms. He was told that he could only run the Seminoles into Florida but he could not invade the Spanish colonies.
Instead of listening to president Monroe, Jackson marched into Florida with 1,700 troops.
