Early Years
When Joe was in high school, he didn't know what he wanted to with his life, so he talked to his guidance counselor. Since Joe liked Math and Science so much, she recommended an engineering course.
Joe thought, "I do not want to drive a choo-choo train". He thought that an engineer could only be a train conductor!
After 2 years at a community college, Joe enrolled at UNF where he graduated in the first class in the Civil Engineering program.
Engineering
A civil engineer has a broad range of areas: roadway design, site layout, designing water and sewer pipes and understanding soils.
Joe specializes in pumps and the fluid flowing in pipes. Joe's job is to calculate flow going into the pipe (velocity) and the friction loss (energy) as that fluid is moving inside that pipe.
With those calculations, Joe sizes a pump that will allow the fluid to be "pushed" into where it needs to go.

When you run water from your sink or flush your toilet, it flows into a sanitary sewer pipe underneath the ground, where it flows into a pump station.
Then, that pump station pumps that wastewater into a pipe (forcemain) into a wastewater treatment plant where that wastewater will be treated.
Joe also designs pools and waterparks. Joe has to calculate the volume of the pool water and filter that volume of water in a certain amount of time to keep it filtered.

Achievements
Joe has shown discipline throughout the years in his career. After earning his engineering degree, he passed the engineering intern exam. He then worked under a Professional Engineer (P.E.) for 4 years until he was able to qualify for the P.E. exam and become a licensed P.E. himself.
The P.E. exam takes 8 hours!
Barriers
Joe has not had any challenges being part of an underrepresented group. Joe states that work is based on your qualifications and skills. Acquiring more clients is based on your quality of work and the requirements for that particular project.
