Hello everyone! My name is Betty the Butterfly. Today, I am going to show you the journey of how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. 

All of us have to go through some steps before becoming a beautiful butterfly. Even me! This process is called metamorphosis. I'm so excited to show you today. Let's go!

First, an adult butterfly will lay an egg on a leaf. This is where the lifecycle of a butterfly begins.

This little guy has to prepare for a big journey ahead and needs food to get strong and healthy. First, the caterpillar will chomp on its egg shell.

After 3-5 days, the egg will hatch and a young caterpillar will crawl out. A caterpillar is an insect and there are many different kinds of caterpillars, that turn into different types of butterflies! A caterpillar lives on the leaves that it eats.

A caterpillar can eat up to 200 leafs by itself!

When the shell is gone, the caterpillar will start to eat nearby leaves. A caterpillar's favorite food is a leaf. But, some caterpillars enjoying eating other things like flower petals, fruits, seeds, and stems.

After all of this eating, the caterpillar starts to grow bigger. When it gets too big for its skin, it will shed it to make room for new skin!

When the caterpillar is big and strong enough, it will stop eating. Now it is time for the next step!

Time for the caterpillar to rest after all of that hard work! The caterpillar will form skin called a chrysalis around itself for protection. This is also called a cocoon. The cocoon will hang from a tree branch. In here, the caterpillar will begin growing into a butterfly!

Now that the caterpillar is in a cocoon, it is now called a pupa. Each pupa stays in the cocoon for different lengths of time. Some pupa hatch in only five days! Other pupas take their time and hatch in 20 or more days. Goodnight little pupa! See you when you are a butterfly!
