One day Red Riding Hood's grandmother called Little Red and asked her to go buy her some groceries. Of course she told her grandmother yes. So Little Red walked out side and looked at the woods and then her mother's car.

Little Red wanted to drive the car but she suddenly realized that she doesn't know how to drive. So she starts to cry.

I really wish I knew how to drive.

A little wolf then heard Little Red crying and approached her.
What's wrong little girl?

I don't know how to drive but I really want to learn.

Ohh that's easy. I can teach you how to do that! What's your name little girl?
My name is Little Red and thank you so much Mrs. Wolf!!!

Alright Little Red, I will teach you how to drive but there are a lot of things that you need to remember so let me help you with remembering first. Okay?
Okay!

In order for your memories to actually be saved they have to pass through 3 stages which are referred to as Atkinson shiffrin model. They are the Sensory Memory, Short-Term Memory, and then Long-Term Memory.
What does those 3 stages mean?

That's a good question Little Red! Sensory Memory is the immediate retrieval of memory. It last in that category for around 2 and a half seconds.
Okay so then where does it go?

Before I tell you where it goes I am going to tell you that when you first enter the car you need to fix your chair, put your seatbelt on, and then crank up the car.
Okay, so that new information goes into my Sensory Memory and stay for around 2 and half seconds.

Exactly! But now that you know that information you are trying to make it stick. So, it makes it way to your Short-term Memory. Your short-term memory can hold a few memories at a time for about 20-30 seconds.
Okay so now that it's in my short term memory tell me something else about driving that can go in my sensory and then short-term memory.

Alrighty, so after you turn the car on you have to put the car in drive and slowly take off. While driving keep your eyes on the road and your hands at 10 and 2. Watch out for animals and people.
Okay, so where did my other information that you told me go? Because it's been a few minutes and I still remember everything.

Your memories are now in your long-term memory. Your long-term memory is a limitless storehouse for your permanent memories.
Okay. But how does my mind process all of this information?

That's a great question but before I answer that I want you to know that while driving you need to focus on the signs you pass and all of your surroundings.
Okay, now tell me how my mind process the new information!!!

Your mind process information in a really simple way. The Levels of Processing by F. Craik & R. Lockhart told us that our mind processes information at multiple levels simultaneously depending upon its characteristics. Basically, the deeper/more known information that we continue to build off of, the better we remember.
That makes sense. That's probably why it is easy for me to remember these things about driving because I see my mother doing it all the time!

Okay, now while trying to remember things we sometimes use the method of Encoding information. We sometimes think of mental pictures. We also use the method of chunking information which is kind of like how we remember phone numbers. We chunk the numbers into groups.
Okay, that makes sense. I am thinking of mental pictures of road signs so I can remember what they mean before I see them.
