Thomas Edison grew from humble beginnings to the inventor of basic technologies, including the first commercially viable incandescent light bulb.

An American inventor, he perfected the telephone, developed one of the first successful versions of the electric lamp, and created the world's first industrial research laboratory.
From his laboratories and workshops emanated the phonograph, the carbon-button transmitter for the telephone speaker and microphone, the incandescent lamp, the first commercial electric light and power system, an experimental electric railroad, and key elements of motion-picture apparatus, as well as a host of other inventions.
While Edison was working on the railroad, an almost tragic event happened for the young man. After Edison rescued a three-year-old from a strayed train, the child's grateful father rewarded him by teaching him how to use the telegraph. By the age of 15, he had learned enough to work as a telegraph operator.
For the next five years, Edison traveled throughout the Midwest as an itinerant telegraph operator. In his spare time, he read a lot, studied and experimented with telegraph technology, and also got acquainted with electrical engineering.
