There once was a dog 

named Harley. She was 

big, white, and very 

fluffy, but most of all 

she was very playful

Newton's first law of motion 

states that an object in motion 

will stay in motion unless a 

force is acted upon it and an 

object at rest will stay at rest 

unless a force is acted upon it.

The apple is at 

rest

Now the apple is in motion 

because the wind pushed it off 

the branch

In this picture you can see that 

Harley is sleeping. While she is 

sleeping she is not moving, which 

means she is not in motion. Harley 

will not be in motion unless something 

wakes her up. 

I squeaked Harley's 

toy, so she woke up. 

Now that Harley is 

awake she is in motion 

and ready to play! 

According to Newton's 

second law of motion, 

acceleration depends on 

the objects mass and on 

the net force acting on 

the object. 

The soccer ball would 

accelerate less because it has 

more mass and a smaller 

person

The baseball would accelerate more because 

it has less mass and a bigger person throwing 

it.
