CROTONE
Francesca M.-G.V. Gravina High School- (Flavia Ferraro's Team)
When thinking of Crotone, several vivid images and thoughts come to mind. First and foremost, it’s the combination of history and natural beauty that makes our town so fascinating. Crotone holds a profound connection to ancient Magna Graecia, and its past as a powerful Greek colony is still evident through its archaeological sites and ancient ruins. The Tempio di Hera Lacinia, with its towering columns overlooking the Ionian Sea, is a striking reminder of the city's Greek heritage and its once-glorious status.

Additionally, Crotone's scientific legacy, especially its association with figures like Pythagoras and Alcmaeon, reflects the intellectual richness of the city. The thought of Crotone also brings to mind ancient scholars, whose contributions to mathematics and medicine still resonate today.

But it's not just history that stands out. Crotone also boasts beautiful beaches like Le Castella, with its crystal-clear waters and scenic vistas, making it a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. The charming old town, with narrow streets, vibrant buildings, and local cafes, paints a picture of a town that has maintained its authenticity and warmth throughout the centuries.

Founded in the 8th century BC as a Greek colony, Crotone has a deep historical significance, and its ancient roots are still evident in its archaeological sites. Magna Graecia, meaning "Great Greece" in Greek, refers to the coastal areas of Southern Italy and Sicily that were colonized by Greek settlers beginning around the 8th century BC.

Crotone (ancient Kroton) was founded by Greek colonists from Achaea in the 8th century BC, around 710 BC. The settlers chose the site because of its fertile land, strategic coastal position, and access to the sea. Over time, Crotone flourished as one of the leading cities of Magna Graecia. The city became particularly famous for its military strength, scientific achievements, and athletic prowess.

Crotone was known for its contributions to philosophy, medicine, and mathematics. One of the city's most famous figures was the philosopher Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BC), who founded a religious and philosophical school in the city. His followers, known as the Pythagoreans, made significant advancements in mathematics, music theory, and astronomy, with the famous Pythagorean Theorem in geometry being attributed to him.
Crotone also had a renowned medical school. Alcmaeon of Croton, a physician and philosopher, is considered one of the early pioneers of anatomy and medicine. He was one of the first to suggest that health depended on the balance of bodily fluids.

In its early years, Crotone was a powerful military force, particularly known for its victory over the neighboring city of Sybaris around 510 BC.
The two cities had been in conflict, and the Battle of the Sybaris River was a decisive moment, in which Crotone's forces destroyed Sybaris, marking the decline of that city and the rise of Crotone as a dominant power in the region.
Crotone also was known for its cultural exchange and political alliances within the Greek world.

By the 4th century BC, Crotone began to lose its political and military power. It faced invasions from external forces, including the Romans. In the 3rd century BC, Crotone was absorbed into the Roman Republic and gradually lost its status as an independent city-state. Despite this, the legacy of Magna Graecia, and particularly of Crotone, continued to influence Roman culture, particularly in philosophy, medicine, and science.
