To keep themselves occupied they decided to play hide and seek. Steve, the older boy covered his eyes and began to count. He could hear his little brothers, Jack’s feet, as he scampered about looking for a place to hide.

“Ready or not I’m coming” cried Steve and then went off looking for Jack. He looked in all the usual places, behind the sofa, behind the bathroom, behind the shower curtain, behind the curtains in every room, under all the beds, but he couldn’t find him. The house was entirely silent.

He heard wood scraping in the basement. Steve hadn’t gone there yet because he was too scared to go down, he was scared because of this nervous tissue that's almond-shaped we call an amygdala. The amygdala is located in the medial temporal lobe of your brain and it plays a role in the limbic system because it is the part of the brain that controls your emotions of sadness and fear.

So Steve decided to call out from the entrance of the basement “come out I found you” but there was only silence. Steve called for Jack to come out and again nothing. He slightly opens the door and tries to hide behind it. He bends down and tries to see if anyone’s in the basement.
