This is the story of me, Flat Stanley. I go to school at
Mt.Bethel Academy in Marietta, Georgia. I am a friend of
Maggie Johnson.
Maggie has a cousin named Kelle who lives in Durango,
Colorado.
Due to the fact that I am small and flat, it is very easy for
me to travel. I just hop in an envelope and off I go!
Maggie decided to send me to Colorado to visit her cousin
Kelle. This is the story of my travels out West!

I started out my trip in Georgia, where it is hot and humid.
We live close to the ocean and get to take trips to the beach!
I was told where I was going in Colorado there was no beach,
but they have mountains and snow. I have never seen snow
before. It will be exciting to go to a new place!
Inside my envelope I was put on a truck and then I was put on
a plane. It was a lonely flight, as none of the other "letters"
could talk. I got to fly across 6 states to get to Colorado. It
was a long trip and I was happy to get out of my envelope.

This is Kelle's house in Durango, Colorado. She lives on a farm with
llamas and chickens. I was so happy to finally arrive! It was lucky I
arrived the day I did, because that afternoon Kelle and her
husband, Keith, left to go camping in the desert in Utah.
So, more traveling, but this time I got to look out the window! We
did not drive very far, but the landscape was very different in
Utah. We went to the southeast part of Utah to a place called
Comb Ridge.

Comb Ridge rises up like the back of a stegosaurus from the desert floor.
It is a geological formation that runs for nearly 100 miles. Comb Ridge has
dwellings and artifacts left behind by the Ancient Pueblo Peoples who lived
there thousands of years ago. You can still find pieces of pottery, dried
corn cobs, drawings called petroglyphs, and fire pits left behind by these
peoples.

It is important to look at a map
before you go hiking into the desert.
This is were we started our hike.

It is very hot in the desert and there is not much water. You have
to carry water or you will get very thirsty.
