I was born Caroline Kelle Carter on
Friday, March 13 th, 1981 in Evanston,
Illinois.
I have always considered Friday the 13th
my lucky day.

When I was a kid my family moved many times because
of my Dad's job in commercial real estate and banking.
It was cool to live in many different places. Even
though we moved a lot, I always had a friend and
playmate, my younger brother, Will.

In addition to moving a lot as a kid, I also went to high
school in four different states: Florida, North Carolina,
Vermont and Georgia.
I had the opportunity to go to different types of schools
and have different experiences. Two of the schools I
went to were boarding schools. The school I went to in
North Carolina was an "outdoor school"- we learned
how to rock climb, survive in the woods, and cut fire
wood for our wood heated cabins.
In Vermont I went to a "farm school" where we had to
get up at 4:30 in the morning and milk the cows, work
in the garden, prepare meals in the kitchen and make
maple syrup.

During the summers in high school I worked
for the Student Conservation Association
doing trail work in Alaska, Washington, and
California.

I went to college at Appalachian State
University in Boone, North Carolina. I
received a degree in Sustainable Development
and Agroecology and a minor in Outdoor
Experiential Education.

When I was 21 years
old, I took off one
year from college
and spent 6 months
walking from
Georgia to Maine
(2,210 miles) along
the Appalachian
Trail. We walked an
average of 20 miles
each day, caring our
food on our backs
and camping along
the way.

My first job after college was working for Seeds of
Change, an organic seed company located in
northern New Mexico. I was the manager of the
research farm which did crop trials and
sustainability education.

I lived in New Mexico for 5 years and then decided
I needed more snow in my life. So, I became an
EMT and worked as a Ski Patroller at Wolf Creek
Ski Area. I worked there for 2 years.
