Mrs. Silver was excited to meet with the school news crew this afternoon.  As the librarian, she had the responsibility of engaging and motivating middle school students to create a daily news show for the school.

Miguel was the first to arrive.  He was excited to get started but had some doubts about his ability to do "Holiday of the Month" section of the news: a report on Dia de los Santos or Day of the Dead.  

Miguel was the first to arrive for the weekly News crew meeting with Mrs. Silver and the other four news crew members.  Each of them has a self-chosen section to report.  Janice is the anchor.  Minsoo is doing school events. Danisha is doing a weekly spotlight interview of a teacher or student. Kyle does a Joke of the Day. Miguel's assignment is a monthly holiday highlight. 

Miguel is from El Salvador and their family celebrates Dia de los Santos or Day of the Dead.  So he wants to highlight this holiday.  The School district also just made it a school holiday in the calendar.  However, he wonders if anybody else would even be interested in it.  He has some doubts about doing it.

The rest of the news crew started to arrive and they got to work on their sections.  However, Miguel still had doubts about his section.  Mrs. Silver noticed the worried and downcast look on Miguel's face.  He also looked defeated and overwhelmed by the challenge of his assignment. She went over to him and invited him to come talk to her.

Mrs. Silver and Miguel walked over to Mrs. Silver's desk.  

"Miguel, how is your report going?"

"Not so good", Miguel responded, "I think others are going to think my holiday is silly.  I think it's going to be too hard to do."

She pointed to the poster of a brain hanging from the front of her desk.  She asked Miguel if he remembered the library lesson she taught last week about growth mindset when doing any kind of research.  He said he remembered the picture of the brain on the poster but that was about all.  Mrs. Silver asked Miguel to take down the poster and look at it.
