Once upon a time in the cold month of September in
the year of 1670, there was a tiny ship called the
"Mayflower" that left Plymouth, England. The tiny ship
had on board 102 people. The people on the ship were
looking for new homes where they can freely practice
their faith.

After a crossing that lasted
66 days, they landed on
Cape Cod. Cape Cod was far
from where they were really
heading for. They were
orginally heading for the
Hudson river.

A month goes by and their ship crosses
Massachusetts. The Pilgrims settle down and
begin to establish a village at Plymouth.

During the first brutal winter, most of the
colonist stayed on the Mayflover. They suffered
from all types of disease. Only half of the
people who were orginally on the ship lived to
see their first New England spring. In March,
the remaining settlers moved where they got
an awesome visit from an Indian who greeted
them in English.

That same Indian then returned later with
another Native American. He was Squanto,
who was a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who
had been kidnapped by an English sea captain
and sold into slavery before running away from
London and returning to his homeland. He
taught the Pilgrims how to catch fish, and
avoid poisonous plants.

In November 1621, the Pilgrims first corn
harest was proven successful. Governor
William Bradford organized a feast and invited
a group of Native American allies that included
the chief.

The Thanksgiving the Pilgrims had did not
include pies, cakes, or other desserts.

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln announced
that the nation will celebrate an official
Thanksgiving holiday on November 26, 1863.
