Two Thousand years ago the native
Americans inhabiting Utah started to
farm, and grow food. Because of this
they started to live in one place and
build permanent shelters.The Ancestral
pueblo Indians also hunted for food, they used
bows and arrows.

They also began to live in small villages with their
families. They lived in pit-houses. eventually they
started to live in houses above the ground.

500 B.C -750 A.D - Basket
maker period
During the Basket maker period the people started
to depend on their crops for most of their food. So
they settled on small farmsteads located close to
good farmland, they lived in pit-houses. They left
behind baskets and crops that archaeologists have
found.

The farmers during this time, grew corn.

Pueblo 1 Period: A.D. 750-
900
During the period of pueblo 1 the people started to
populate the Mesa Verde region. The people farmed
most of their food. They lived in houses pit-houses
and houses made of dirt and wood. They left behind
corn, ladders, and animal bones.

Many of these families lived close together in
villages.

Pueblo II Period: A.D. 900
to 1150
They tried to farm corn to eat. However the people
started to move south, away from the Mesa Verde
region, because of a drought. They lived in houses
that had more than one story.

Archaeologists have found large sites where they
think the people went to trade and socialize, they
have also found shell jewelry, copper bells,
turquoise, and macaw feathers at these sites.

These pueblo Indians created many things, and
were good farmers.
