Chapter 1
“I’ve been reading this book called the Closet Chronicles lately,” said Shapeshift as him, Winter, and Rock walked down the path to Pog City. They were tasked by Mentatenta, the king of all kings, to pick some wild Pograpefruit to be eaten for the Pogpogdo City celebration. It was June 18, the birthday of the queen, after all. It had become a national holiday after Winter drove off an army of Neodians only with a small team of Pogs. “I still don’t understand why the birthday girl had to pick the birthday Pograpefruit! Get some Pog peasants to do it for me!” Shapeshift made a tutting sound with his tongue. “But Winter, the Pograpefruits taste better if one picks them themselves.” Rock rolled
his eyes. “Shapeshift, why do you always tag along?” whined Rock. A lady walked past them saying “Don’t whine about the soon-to-be-prince! It’s very unattractive!” Rock rolled his eyes again, then focused them on Winter. He quickly switched to looking at the Pograpefruit trees when Winter looked back at him. “You know,” said Winter, “people can innately feel if someone is staring at them. It’s pretty creepy, actually.” Rock blushed. “Only girls blush,” said Shapeshift, making Rock turn even redder. Now it was Winter’s turn to roll her eyes. “Come on, Shapeshift, you don’t have to do that. This isn’t Year 6 with Mrs. Rhyne!” Then Shapeshift blushed. “Hypocrite,” mumbled Rock, which got him a
slap in the face by Winter. “Ow,” he whined. “VERY UNATTRACTIVE!” called the lady from a nearby hill. Rock sighed. They moved farther up the path until they had three full buckets of Pograpefruit, opening the grand doors to Pogpogdo City. The Pogs cheered, looking at Winter and Shapeshift. Rock heard a lot of their names being called, but not one ‘Rock’. He sighed, remembering how he killed Methionyl in a battle. He should be getting the cheers, not them. Winter turned to look at Rock and he was gone. Winter tapped Shapeshift to get his attention. “Hey, Shapeshift,” she called over the cheers. She leaned closer to Shapeshift and whispered “I need to find Rock.” She looked around,
finally spotting Rock crying on the roof of a building. She reached into her pocket and grabbed her grappling hook. She shot it at the roof, startling Rock. Rock’s face turned bright red. “I didn’t want you to see me like this,” he coughed. “That’s why I went up here.” Winter reached for Rock’s hand but he pulled away. “If Shapeshift sees-” he started, but Winter wrapped him in a hug. “You remind me of Wright. Wright was my friend.” Rock started to cry into Winter’s shoulder, slowly drifting off to sleep.
Chapter 2
Rock heard a person yelling. He sounded livid, but Rock just couldn’t make out who it was. He rubbed his eyes and tried to look again. He was still on the roof of the building, Winter was asleep next to him, and Shapeshift’s face was purple. Rock opened his mouth to talk, but Shapeshift kicked him in the face, causing his nose to bleed. In all the commotion, Winter awoke, slapping Shapeshift continuously while screaming in short bursts “IT-WAS-AN-ACCIDENT-GIVES-YOU-NO-RIGHT-TO-WAAAH!” Winter finally punched Shapeshift square in the nose, sending him sliding off the roof and collapsing in a heap on the concrete. Winter turned back to Rock, who braced for the impact of Winter’s fist. Instead, he
felt Winter grab his hand and pull it down. “I’m not going to hurt you. It wasn’t your fault.” Winter gave him another hug. “Don’t worry, I’m not in the slightest tired.” Rock laughed. “But what about Shapeshift? I thought he was your prince and all.” Now Winter laughed. “I’m pretty mad at him right now. And Kick? I’m pretty sure he’s dead, isn’t he? Muscle smashed his ship into his hiding place on Sono II. And on that note, isn’t he, like, a bad guy?” “No,” replied Rock. “The evil forces were too powerful for him to stop it. He was molded into evil by fear.” Winter looked down. “I should apologize to Shapeshift about the sleeping-with-Rock-on-the-roof thing, and for knocking him out.” Then they both
laughed. They started talking about the war, and princes, and Mentitia, and how they shared lots of things in common. They both wanted their honeymoons to be in the mountains of Mentitia. Rock’s reason was because it was ‘dangerous’ and Winter’s was that it was ‘mysterious’. “It would be funny if we got married and went to the Mentitia Mountains.” “Never gonna happen,” Winter chuckled, then she shot her grappling hook at a tree and flew down to the streets.
Chapter 3
“I think she loves me,” Rock cooed to Muscle, Rubybug, and Twohead at the Transcend HQ. Muscle’s response was a hysterical laugh that ended with him punching a table clean in two, Rubybug’s was a simple sneer, and Twohead’s was a punch to the face. Twohead was Shapeshift, so what would Rock expect? Roboboy came from behind, grabbing Rock’s shoulder with his left robotic hand. “Good for you,” he sneered. “That’s not sincere,” Rock said. “Get to work, soldier. There’s no time to take that out on me.” Rock walked up to a random Transcend member, jumping and staring when he saw who it was. The hooded figure’s mask had only 6 letters. S-N-U-D-O-O. Snudoo. Rock turned away.
“You don’t have to hide from me, you know,” Snudoo remarked. “And you don’t have to hide behind that mask,” Twohead retorted. Snudoo’s head drooped. Rock reached for her hand and she took it. “Twohead is being a big jerk,” said Snudoo/Winter. She let Rock wrap his arms around her, putting them both at ease. “Rock and Winter sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!” Twohead jeered. Winter sunk deeper into Rock’s Koikian robe. She quickly flung two throwing stars from her hand, both of which pierced Twohead’s hands. He shapeshifted into a lion and flung the blood all over Winter and Rock. Rock whipped a Jjikki Jjikki out of his backpack, flinging it over Winter right as the blood rained down. “Thank you,”
Winter whispered to Rock. Rock held her tighter and flung his own throwing star at Twohead. It hit his lion leg, cutting it deeply. Rock and Winter slowly walked to the teleporter, prepared to return to Pogland. “Maybe I love you,” said Rock. “Maybe I love you," Winter replied.
Chapter 4
Back in Pogland, Rock was invited to visit Winter’s castle. “You know, I’m starting to get the hang of you,” said Winter as they walked up the steps to Winter’s bedroom. “Yeah,” said Rock, “sleeping with someone on the roof of a random guy’s house tends to form bonds between people.” Winter laughed and grabbed Rock’s hand. Rock barely managed to grab on before Winter pressed a button and the stairs started zooming upwards like an escalator on steroids. Rock held on tight to Winter as the blurs of the window that Rock saw got higher and higher and higher. “You know I get motion sickness,” Rock gulped. “You don’t need to sound condescending!” Winter snapped, causing Rock to shrivel. Winter
wrapped her arms around Rock again, giving Rock a feeling of eternal warmth. He didn’t feel sick anymore. He felt like his soul had reached its maximum peace. Still, he was taken off guard by the sudden stop of the machine, which finally toppled him over the edge. He collapsed to the ground, groaning but refusing to let anything come up. He slowly got to his feet, leaning on Winter for support, as they stumbled into Winter’s bedroom. “Honestly, I’m surprised that nothing came up,” Winter said. Rock didn’t laugh. He was still recovering. Finally after minutes of Rock laying there, he finally got up. “I still… I still can’t believe that Kick is dead. He was my best friend…” Winter placed her hand
on Rock’s back and whispered “I maybe love you.” Rock smiled and leaned against Winter again. “I maybe love you too.” They sat there, letting the day go on, forgetting about Transcend, and Roboboy, and Twohead, and the world. Gradually the sky darkened, but they stayed there, staring at each other, until Rock’s communicomm beeped. “Goodbye,” said Winter as Rock prepared to leave. Rock turned around and saw Winter right behind him. Rock laughed and gave Winter one more hug. But Winter’s blue eyes still shone with a desire. Rock removed his hand but Winter grabbed it again, leaning forward and kissing Rock.
Chapter 5
The next day, working for Transcend with Winter was awkward. Winter and Rock could not stop staring at each other as they built gadgets and weapons to aid in the war. Twohead finally walked over, sitting down right in between Rock and Winter. “I can tell what you did by the way you guys are acting,” mocked Twohead. “You kissed.” Rock and Winter simultaneously blushed, staring at the floor and anywhere but Twohead. Eventually, Twohead stormed off, leaving Winter and Rock next to each other. They kept building the gadgets in silence, but eventually Winter whispered “I was rash to do that last night. I’m sorry.” “It’s okay,” replied Rock. “I kinda… liked it.” “But will you think differently of me now?” “I’ll
only maybe love you more.” Winter smiled and scooted her chair closer to Rock’s. Rock did the same, moving until their chairs touched. Winter grabbed Rock’s hand and shoved it under the desk. “Why-” but Winter had already shoved his other hand under the desk. When the pairs of hands intertwined, a flash of yellow light spread up each of their arms, culminating in their hearts, where it burst out in the form of two hands of light that held each other like Rock’s and Winter’s. “You do know what this means, don’t you?” asked Winter. Rock was perplexed. “We’re a 100% perfect match."
Chapter 6
Rock’s mind was a blur of recent memories with Winter. The roof. The kiss. The perfect match. There was one thing that appeared in all of them: Rock’s eyes. For a split second, so short that Rock wouldn’t have noticed unless he was searching for it, his eyes flashed with yellow. The mark of true love. He finally got to his senses when a cold splash of ice water rolled down his back. Wait. Rock shook himself and turned back. Twohead was holding a bloody knife. Rock felt it suddenly. That wasn’t ice water. Winter gasped as Rock collapsed in a heap on the table. Winter flipped and spun, punching Twohead in the jaw. He roared in pain and spit a tooth at Winter’s feet.
