This is Sally Jayne Carmichael. She is nine 

years old and from Arkansas. Her pa is in the 

military and is fighting in the First Gulf War. 

Sally misses her pa very much.

This is Mary J Bridge. She is also nine years 

old but is from Kuwait. She believes that 

America is a bad bad place because of the war 

happening in her country. Mary doesn't like 

war.

The First Gulf War was fought in early 1991 

between Iraq and 39 other countries. This war 

took place mainly in Iraq and Kuwait, which is 

a small, oil rich nation that borders Iraq.

In August of 1990, Iraq invaded and gained 

control of Kuwait. When Iraqi troops moved 

to the border of Saudi Arabia, they feared that 

they'd be invaded next. As a result, troops 

were sent in to protect Saudi Arabia. 

Iraq - the border country to Kuwait - wanted to 

take the wealth of Kuwait (Mary J.'s country) 

because of the wealth of oil. Kuwait and Saudi 

Arabia are relied on by the world as primary 

sources of petroleum.

Because of Iraq's decision to invade, the world 

stepped in (as well as Sally's country) and formed 

an alliance, or coalition, to stop the war that was 

going to happen.This didn't work for the First 

Gulf War had begun.

Both sides fought bravely. The United States 

President, at the time, ordered a missile attack to try 

to end the one year war. January 17th, 1991, coalition 

bombing Iraqi industrial and military. In late 

February, the coalition launched a ground attack 

onto Kuwait, which defeated the Iraqi soldiers.

Several years after the war had ended, President Bill 

Clinton had ordered "Operation: Desert Storm" 

leading people to question if we were there for peace 

or revenge.
