MyPlate shows you and your parents
the 5 food groups you should be eating
at every meal!
The plate helps you understand how
much of each food you should eat at
each meal!
In this book, we will look at what types
of food are in each group, and how to
eat more of certain foods, like fruits
and veggies! Believe it or not, you'll
learn ways to love fruits and vegetables!

This part of the plate shows you how much protein you should
be eating.
As you can see, protein should take up a little less than a
quarter of your plate.
What is protein?
Some of you might know that protein is foods like chicken,
beef, pork, fish or seafood, but did you know you can also get
protein from foods like beans, eggs, soy, nuts and seeds?
They are great ideas to switch up with lean meats and seafood.

Here we can see the grain portion of the plate.
When choosing what to eat for dinner, you and your family
should try to eat whole grains for at least half of the grains
you eat throughout the day.
Great examples of whole grains are whole-wheat breads and
pastas, oatmeal, and brown rice.
The white bread you probably like to eat sandwiches on is
made from flour that has very little nutrients like vitamins.
Grains should take up a little more than a quarter of your
plate.

Fruits and veggies are a really important part of a balanced
meal. Together they should take up HALF of your plate!
Fruits and veggies make great snacks, especially if you are on
the go!
So right now you are probably thinking EWWW! Fruits
and Veggies? You might be okay with fruits because they are
nice and sweet, but I bet you aren't a fan of vegetables. But
guess what? Veggies aren't always that bad!
Up next are some great ways to get more fruits and veggies in
your diet!

If you aren't crazy about vegetables, ask your mom to make a meal
where she can "hide" the veggies! A great example is peas and
other veggies in pasts dishes!

Make healthy pizzas at home with pasta sauce, low-fat cheese and
throw some of your favorite veggies on top.

Make a fresh fruit smoothie with frozen fruits and yogurt!
This makes both a great breakfast or snack!

Help mom bake some muffins, cookies or other desserts
and add in fresh or dried fruit!
