"You'll feel better mom," Peter whispered softly.
A bone-scraping cough woke Peter up. His mother had mill fever, an illness that was caused by the polluted air and other bad conditions inside a textile mill. Peter got out of the bed that he shared with his mother and brought her a ladle full of hot broth. After making sure that she would be okay, he shoved his feet into his hole-ridden shoes.

“I’m going to be late to work,” Peter muttered as he sprinted through the muddy streets.
Peter nearly slammed into the factory doors but opened them just in time. He glanced around and saw the Overseer who watches over the children working in the factory, He hoped the Overseer would cut him some slack.
“I’m sorry that I’m late!" Peter said quickly, "My mother has mill fever.”

The Overseer glared at Peter and yelled “I demand you to give me a fine!”

The Overseer was, to put it simply, a jerk. For some reason, he hated workers who were children. Children worked mostly as piecers and scavengers. A piecer’s job was to retie loose threads on machines while a scavenger’s job was to crawl under machines and collect tiny pieces of cotton. The Overseer would go out of his way to punish them.

“ You’re in BIG trouble,” the Overseer chuckled cruelly, “There are plenty of punishments that I could choose from. Hitting you with leather straps, hanging iron weights around your neck, nailing your ear on the table, and hanging you from the roof in a basket are some options.”

“But, but… I don’t have any money,” Peter replied, avoiding the Overseer’s gaze.

Peter was horrified by the punishments the Overseer had stated. His friend, Ned, looked at him with a terrified look.
“Wha… wh...” Peter was speechless. “Please, just give me another chance, I will work for 2 days straight…”

“Stop trying to convince me, you're punishment is to be hanged from the roof in a basket,“ the Overseer said with a smirk as he grabbed Peter’s wrist.
“Aaaaooooo!!!!! my hand, my hand!!!” Ned, Peter's friend, cried, trying to distract the Overseer.

“Over here!” a girl whispered.
The Overseer turned to look at Ned and Peter used that opportunity to wrench himself free of the Overseer’s grip. Peter looked at the girl that called him and then ran over to the group of girls in the corner. They were tied to the wall with ropes.
"You cut your hand!" the Overseer yelled, "Well, now, this means you're fired!!!"

"NO, WAIT...," Ned yelled, trying to avoid reacting to the pain of the cut on his hand while preoccupying the Overseer.
