There once was a stray cat named Zara. Every day, since she was little, she stole a fish from the fish shop in her home town, Meriela. Like any stray cat, Zara had enemies. Stray dog enemies, to be exact. But, Zara thought, what was her meaning of life? Living in her world, the small town with a large name? This, she thought, was important, but not needed. She leaped from her spot in the bush and climbed up a house on to a roof to enjoy a dead bird that was there. Then she heard barking. "Oh, no!" Zara meowed. "The stray dogs!"
Zara took a running leap from one roof to another roof. She almost slipped, but made it. She trotted over to the center of the roof and lay down. Before she knew it, she was sleeping. It was early dawn when Zara woke up the next morning. She was cold and damp, like she had somehow slept through rain. No more barking. Time for the morning hunt, Zara thought. Well, I guess more like steal. She jumped from roof to roof until she was on the roof of the fish shop. Zara could smell the mouth watering fish from inside the shop. The window is always left open. Thought Zara as
she climbed inside. There, on the cutting board, was a whole fish! "My lucky day!" She meowed. Zara snached the fish and jumped onto a roof to enjoy her prize. Then, Zara felt rain. It was coming down hard. Harder. Zara ran from the roof to the porch of a house with an overhang so rain could not get you wet. She leaped under this, drenched in rain and very tired. But before she knew quite what was happening, Zara was being pulled by the scruff. By dogs! Then, her instincts kicked in. She yoweled, she clawed, she hissed, and she bunny kicked, she almost
screamed... but the dogs finally backed off. "Wow!" Meowed Zara. With all the commotion, she didn't see that the rain picked up. Then, CRACK! It was the loudest noise Zara had ever heard in her life. She bolted like the wind. And good thing she did, because right where she was originally standing, CRASH! A massive tree had fallen because of lightning. Even the biggest dogs were scared. Horribly, right after running, Zara fell asleep. When she woke up, she was in the den of the dogs! Even though her legs were shaking with fear, she ran out of there as fast as she could, found a roof and jumped on it. Before she knew it, she was asleep.
Zara woke up. She had not seen how light it was. It was completely dark. "Perfect!" She purred. Zara once again made it to the fish shop and made it out again with this time only the body of the fish. She ate slowly. Then she fell asleep. It was afternoon when Zara woke up, but still the same day. Zara groomed herself.
She caught a mouse and started to play with it. Then, that question came into her mind, why do I live? Zara tried shaking herself to rid her mind of it, but that would not work. She tried to run away from it, but that did not work either. "Why,"
Zara meowed out loud, "do I feel like this dumb question is so very important? Is my meaning... just to live? To catch birds? To fight dogs? Why?" It was so frustrating that Zara just went to sleep. When she woke up, it was barely raining. But still raining. Zara didn't care. She was annoyed and grumpy. She stormed into the fish shop and raided the new fish basket, stomped back out, and clomped onto the roof with a large fish. Zara walked around the roof.
All of a sudden, a sharp pain from Zara's front left paw shocked her! She doubled over with pain and fear just in time to see a hornet fly away. Zara hissed and before she was given time to think, she fell asleep. When she woke up, her paw ached and it was impossible to walk on it. "Oh,no! How am I supposed to get fish from the fish shop?" Zara meowed. She decided to just not eat that day.
