Once upon a time, there was an 8-year-old girl called Laura. She was sweet and clever, but also really special: she was in a wheelchair.
One day, she moved to another city with her mother, who had found a job there. She was really worried, as she didn’t know whether she could make friends because of the wheelchair.
I'm excited, but also worried: will I make friends?
On the first day at her new school, her new classmates were very surprised. They had never seen a girl in a wheelchair! In class, Laura had a special table —so that her chair could fit well in it— and the help of Maya, an assistant teacher who helped her to move around the school.
Wow, look at that girl!
Hi!
Her fellows were pretty shocked, and began to bomb her with questions about her table and the woman who accompanied her, which Laura answered happily.
The table helps me a lot, because with normal tables I would not be able to write. Maya is an assistant, she helps me go to wherever I need.
After a few hours of class, it was time for a break and everyone went out to the playground. Laura’s classmates wanted to show her their favorite place: a huge garden with many kinds of flowers and insects.
Very excited, the children led Laura to the garden, but when they arrived Laura seemed sad. Immediately they asked her:
- What’s wrong? Don’t you like it?
And she replied:
- I won’t be able to go to the garden, because to get there you need to go through the stairs.
And her classmates answered:
- Don’t worry! Together we'll find a way for you to come with us, you'll see.
So all began to think and give their ideas
- Why don't we take her through the stairs together?
- What if we tie balloons to make her fly?
- We can make a catapult!
But it took them little time to realize that those ideas wouldn’t work.
After a while, one of the kids found a large board hidden in some bushes.
- Hey, look at that! Why don’t we use it as a ramp?
- Wow, good idea! Let’s do it!
And they set it up in such a way that it worked. They told Laura, and she didn’t wait to use it and go play with them.
