There was once a man by the name of Liam Sadier. Liam was a professional video game designer for Nintendo, where he was behind some of their best games they had ever produced. Under his guidance, Nintendo had made millions of dollars on successful video games, and Liam made money too. Liam made six figures each year, and he was proud of it. In fact, he was so proud of it that he bragged to all of his online friends about it. In fact, everything Liam did was online.
His friends only spoke with him over the web, his home was full of smart speakers and robots of different sorts. Liam had it all. And he never left his computer. He used more electricity than everyone in his neighborhood - combined! So it wasn’t much of a surprise that when the power went out, Liam had no clue what to do.
Somewhere nearby, a construction crew accidentally took out the power while working on a new set of apartment buildings, and everyone in Liam’s small but expensive beachside neighborhood lost power. Liam was at his computer at the time, taking a lunch break (he was working for home - he had the flu) when suddenly his computer shut off. But it wasn’t just his computer - it was the lights, the smart speakers, the TVs and the charging stations that his 6 phones and 3 Teslas were plugged into. Everything was off.
“No!,” Liam cried out, upset over the loss of power. He raced over to his phones at their charging station, only to find that there was no cellular connection either, meaning he had no working technology at his disposal. Sad, he searched the house for anything that could still turn on, but he knew in the back of his mind that nothing would work.
Still, he continued searching, calling out every wake word he could remember for his various smart speakers and devices, but he was met with no reply. He had no idea what to do. His life was online. His friends, his job and his hobbies - they all required technology. If the power didn’t come back on soon, Liam was going to go crazy - he kind of already was.
Liam had curtains over every window, so that he could see his various screens with no natural light interfering. However, the curtains were also a disadvantage in this case, because they were blocking the only source of light that remained in Liam’s home, since Liam refused to ever go outside. After all, why go outside, when you can go outside in the Metaverse?
