It was a warm Spring day in sunny Cancun,
When along came a girl named Emily Bloom.
She walked along with her dog, her faithful companion,
Exploring the hills, and the fields and the canyons.

But Emily was restless, though she wasn't sure why,
And it was then that she happened to gaze up to the sky,
And said to her dog, "I'd sure like to fly...
Fly right past those clouds and go way-way up high.
I'd like to go traveling up to the Moon,
Or to Mars or Jupiter or even Neptune!
I wonder what's up there? What adventures I'd find?
Do you think we should travel there?
Do you think that you'd mind?"

But the dog whined and growled as if to say,
"I am NOT going with you. I'd rather stay."
He gave her a woof, and she patted his head.
"Alright then," she said. "You stay here instead.
You can stay with my Mom, but I have to go shopping.
I must buy a rocket and I better get hopping."
So with a woof and a tear, the two parted ways,
Knowing they might not see each other for many, many days.

Emily went to the store and asked for a rocket,
But the store clerk instead tried to sell her a locket.
"No, a rocket" said Emily. "To go up to the sky."
And the clerk said, "A rocket? You mean one that can fly?
We don't sell those at all in Cancun,
But I think there's a place up in Saskatoon.
It's called Ron's Rockets and Snowmobiles.
It's the place to go if you want some good deals."

So she got on the bus bound for old Saskatoon,
Our dear brave adventurer, Emily Bloom.
When she got off the bus, she went right straight to Ron's,
And saw all kinds of rockets made of gold, silver and bronze.

& Snowmobiles

But the one that for her had the most appeal
Was the shiny gray rocket made of glistening steel.
"I'll take that one!" she said, and paid Ron with cash
And Ron took the money, but was sure she would crash.
"Can you drive this thing?" he said with suspicion.
"I wouldn't want you to get hurt on your little space mission."
"Don't worry," said Emily, and she got into her rocket.
So Ron waved goodbye and put the money in his pocket.

Emily looked all around, then pushed a button to start,
And at first the rocket rumbled like the sound of a fart
But then the rumbling got louder and louder
And as the rocket took off, Emily couldn't be prouder.

The rocket flew up high, right up into space
And got faster and faster like a horse in a race.
She flew up to the stars and out past the moon.
That brave space explorer, Emily Bloom.
She circled past Mars and then up to Venus
And she couldn't help shouting, "I'm such a genius!
I figured out this rocket in 10 seconds flat!
Not too many people would be able to do that!"
But Emily would find out that, as smart as she was,
A genius she wasn't, and that is because
She hadn't thought about landing her rocket, you see.
She didn't know how, oh silly girl, she.

She flew right past Saturn, a grin on her face
And kept right on smiling as she went deep into space,
And as she got closer to the planet Neptune,
She realized she must land, and she must land quite soon.
For she saw that her rocket would soon need some fuel,
And though Neptune's weather could be cold and quite cruel,
She hoped there was a gas station somewhere in the snow,
So she could fuel up, look around, and then go.

And it was then that she realized her terrible mistake
Because she didn't know how to slow down or to brake.
To take off in her rocket had been really quite easy
But her knowledge of rocket science in all was quite measly.
She saw she might fly off into the unknown,
And when she realized that, she gave a loud groan.
If she ran out of fuel out there in deep space,
She would disappear forever without even a trace.

She looked 'round the rocket for a holder of some kind
That might have a manual in which she might find
The how-to instructions for landing her ship
So she could be safe on this perilous trip.
Then down on the control panel, she found a small nook
In which there was stashed a little blue book.
She propped up the small book by the big steering wheel
Then read through the instructions with a great deal of zeal.

a Rocket

And just as it looked like she might fly to her doom,
She flipped on some switches
and steered straight for Neptune
And as the big snowdrifts came into her view
She knew then exactly just what she should do.
She peered at the panel and pushed a big button,
And that's when the rocket, just all of a sudden
Opened a hatch and out came some skis,
And when Emily saw that, she felt very pleased,
Because her rocket had turned into a big snowmobile
That landed on Neptune with a rather loud squeal!

It slid over snowbanks for a mile or three
Then stopped when it bumped into a Neptunian tree.
So Emily put on her boots and a jacket
And stepped out of the rocket to a terrible racket!
The Neptunians came running and crowded around
And one in particular made a very strange sound.
Emily had never seen a people so odd
And when they babbled at her, all she did was just nod.

But then a bigger man pushed through the crowd
And shouted at the others in a voice very loud
And they trembled and stood back
as he waddled his way through
Then he pointed at Emily and shouted "WHO ARE YOU?!!!!"
Emily smiled and said, "You speak English, I see.
So nice to meet you, Mr..... uh..."
"Schlickerschlock," said he.
And Emily had to stifle a giggle.
(I mean, doesn't the name 'Schlickerschlock' make you
laugh, just a little?)

"Mr. Schlickerschlock," said Emily. "So nice to meet ya!
I'm hungry and cold and just dying for a pizza!
Do you have a restaurant and gas station 'round here?"
But Mr. Schlickerschlock reached up and boxed Emily's ear.
"You foolish young Earthling! How dare you!" he said.
And Emily yelped and her face turned bright red
And the Neptunians surrounded her and dragged her away,
While Mr. Schlickerschlock yelled, "For this, you will pay!"

Then Emily was thrown into Neptunian jail
And she stood in her cell, with her face looking pale,
She muttered to herself, "I should have stopped at Mars!"
Then Mr. Schlickerschlock showed up
and peered through the bars.
"Good sir!" said brave Emily. "Just what did I do?
If I did something wrong, I apologize to you!
My rocket needs gas. That's why I dropped in.
I didn't know landing here would be such a sin!"

Mr. Schlickerschlock stared at her and gave a quick snort.
"Where you landed," he said, "is not an airport!
Our houses, you see, are deep in the snow,
And you just ran over an entire row!"
Emily gasped out, "I didn't know!
I saw no houses down below.
I thought I could land quite safely there.
Oh what can I do to make repair?"

Mr. Schlickerschlock gave an evil cackle.
"You can never repair it. It's too tough to tackle.
We've decided it's better to hold you hostage
Until someone from Earth can bring ten tons of sausage!"

"Sausage?" said Emily. "Well that's mighty strange.
Me for some sausage would be quite an exchange.
Don't you have sausage of your own around here?
After all, Earth is not very near."

But Mr. Schlickerschlock didn't answer;
he just dialed his phone,
A weird looking thing that resembled a bone,
And this bone phone was attached to an even stranger antenna
with writing on the side of it saying "Made in Vienna."
The phone made strange noises of crackles and beeps
And then an eery wail that gave Emily the creeps.
Then suddenly through the speaker she heard her Mom speak,
And on hearing her voice, Elena let out a shriek.

Vienna

"Mamma," she cried. "I'm being held hostage!
You must come at once with a whole bunch of sausage!"
Then Mr. Schlickerschlock interrupted
and told Emily to shush.
"Be quiet, young Earthling, or I'll turn you to mush!"

"Mrs. Bloom!" said Mr. Schlickerschlock.
"Your daughter's quite right.
She's up here on Neptune and she's been quite impolite!
She's mowed down our houses in her rocketmobile,
And as you can imagine, that was quite an ordeal.
But all can be forgiven if you would just bring
Ten tons of sausage all tied up with string.
Viennese sausage is our favorite, of course,
And you must bring it now, or we're prepared to use force!"

Vienna

And her Mom said, "My word! Well that's rather silly!
To bring Viennese sausage to a planet so chilly!
And why Viennese? I have salame, you know.
Italian salame keeps well in the snow.
"Salami? We don't want salami!" said he.
"Sala-may," she corrected. "It's from Italy."
"Italy-Schmitaly!" Mr. Schlickerschlock groused.
"We only like Vienna - home of Mozart and Strauss!
Viennese sausage is what we need,
Or your daughter will suffer! She will indeed!"

Vienna

And with a bang, he then hung up his phone,
And left poor Emily standing alone.
She curled up and shivered in the corner of her cell,
And after two days, she felt very unwell.

But after two days, she heard noise from the sky
And she leaped up to the bars and peered way up high.
And hovering above was a big round space ship,
That spun in circles at a very fast clip.
But then it stopped, and hung in the air,
"We're here for Emily!" a loudspeaker blared.
A beam of light shone down from the craft,
And Emily waved, and danced and laughed.
