The state bird of Alabama is the Northern Flicker (yellowhammer). That is why one of Alabama's nicknames is the yellowhammer state.

The Northern Flicker is a medium sized bird in the woodpecker family. Northern Flickers help keep control of populations. They keep control of their prey's population especially ants. Northern Flickers eat mostly ants and beetles that they gather from the ground.

In the winter they eat mostly fruits and seeds.

Northern Flickers are mostly found in woodlands.
